Shelter Island is a small, mostly wooded island set in the middle of the Peconic Bay, reached only by ferry from the North Fork and South Fork. With a large nature preserve, quiet roads, and bayfront beaches, it has a slower, more tucked-away feel.

Character Landscape
Shelter Island is defined by trees, water, and space. Much of the island is wooded or open meadow, especially within Mashomack Preserve. Houses sit back from the road behind stone walls, hedges, and native vegetation, giving the island a quiet, residential feel.
The shoreline is irregular, full of inlets, salt marshes, and small beaches. Marinas and mooring fields sit in protected coves, with views back to the North Fork and South Fork. The roads are narrow and mostly low-speed, encouraging slower travel and more looking around.
Signature Experiences
Mashomack Preserve & Coastal Trails
A large Nature Conservancy preserve covers a significant part of the island, with marked trails through oak woods, meadows, wetlands, and along the bay. It’s one of the East End’s best examples of protected coastal habitat.
Bay Beaches & Calm Water
Public bay beaches offer shallow, calmer water and sandy or pebbled shorelines that are comfortable for families and relaxed swimming. Even in high season, the atmosphere is more low-key than ocean surf beaches.
On-the-Water Exploration
Kayaks and paddleboards are well-suited to Shelter Island’s coves and creeks. Short paddles bring visitors close to marsh edges, bird life, and quiet stretches of shoreline that are not accessible by car.
Island Inns & Porches
Historic inns and updated small hotels dot the island, often with porches, decks, and lawns facing the water or looking over treetops. Evenings tend to be about conversation, food, and views rather than large-scale nightlife.
